Poland's infrastructure market on the threshold of a new leap. Important discussion at EEC 2025

Share

Over the past 20 years, Poland has made a big leap in infrastructure. This can be seen with the naked eye when using expressways, railways or airports. This is also confirmed by the figures. After the first leap, it is time for the second. To be successful, it must be well prepared and the rebound should be dynamic. We will be talking about this at the European Economic Congress.

On entering the European Union (1 May 2004), Poland had just over 600 km of motorways (441 km of motorways and only 161 km of expressways). At the end of 2024, there will be 5206 km of such roads, including 1885 km of motorways and 3321 km of expressways. Another 400 km of roads are expected to arrive this year.

Although the length of railway lines managed by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (Polish Railways) decreased slightly (from 19,042 km in 2005 to 18,807 at the end of 2023), the length of track increased by a third (2005: 27,593 km, 2023: 36,327 km). Port transshipments have also grown solidly over this period, from around 50 million tonnes to over 130 million tonnes.

In many respects, this trend needs to continue, but also the change is becoming clearer. In the case of roads, the moment of completion of the network planned in government documents is getting closer. More and more thought has to be given to their maintenance, as well as to their inclusion in international transport routes. Here, however, we have to wait for our neighbours to build suitable roads: Czechs, Slovaks and Lithuanians, and in the perspective of the Ukrainians.
